Birth Control Tapestry

Crocheting my birth control information sheet, word for word.

A comment on freedom, bodily autonomy, informed consent, and how women’s rights are arduously fought for - for years. Crocheted out of millions of small stitches and red sacrifices, which can be unravelled so quickly. Deeper than a list of side effects, built on a history of suffering. Pregnancy and birth are hundreds of times more dangerous and uncomfortable than birth control. Activists fought and were imprisoned for the leap forward for women’s rights that access to birth control was. Countless people, present and past, have been stuck in oppressive situations because they were denied information about their biology and the right to control their own reproduction and made to be a benchmark of our turbulent time, when human rights are under attack directly and through misinformation campaigns. Future generations should be allowed to read every single word about the science of their bodies and given the right to protect them. They should feel those words, how real they are, in yarn on a 12-meter tapestry that swallows a room.
